Corporatization of Fixing (MY) Broken Glasses

Yukyung (Yuky) Kim

Bachelor

Graduation project by Yukyung (Yuky) Kim at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

This graduation project began with a broken pair of glasses. Yukyung Kim examined how eyewear, like many fashion accessories, is driven by branding that fuels overproduction and inequality. Choosing repair over replacement, the project explores whether mended glasses can become more desirable than new ones from a luxury brand. By focusing on an everyday object worn on the face, designer Yukyung Kim asks if daily habits can challenge the logic of fast consumption and the capitalist system behind it.

The work also exposes tensions between mass production, mass luxury and local making, alongside the ethical responsibilities of designers within cycles of production, consumption and waste. Rather than offering a single solution, it highlights repair as a meaningful act within a flawed system.
