Observing the Disappearances
Graduation project by Yuji Inoue at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
In Japan, more than 2,000 names once described different kinds of wind, reflecting a close relationship with seasonal rhythms, agriculture and everyday life. As air-conditioning, urbanisation and climate change reshape both the environment and our experience of it, many of these winds — and our ability to perceive them — are disappearing altogether. ‘Observing the Disappearances’ translates six named winds into kinetic sculptures, combining direction, movement, scent, humidity and material to evoke their distinctive qualities. By presenting six seasonal winds together in a single installation, the work invites visitors to reconsider wind not simply as weather, but as a cultural and sensory presence.
