In Japan, the digital afterlife industry offers the preservation of the deceased through photographs, recordings and messages as a replacement for established mourning practices. Yet its interfaces look little different from those of any other app. Conceived as a crematorium for data, ‘Alter Altar’ reimagines digital mourning through embodied rituals inspired by Japanese butsudan altars. Inserting a USB drive becomes a contemporary counterpart to lighting incense, triggering a lotus pattern symbolising reincarnation. Its form shifts according to audio frequencies, image colours and drifting text messages, with each dataset of digital remains generating a unique flower. Yosuke Matsushita's interviews with digital afterlife service providers, researchers and people engaging in the traditional funeral industry suggested that what matters to the bereaved is not a reconstruction’s accuracy but the space left by its imperfections. Rather than recreating the deceased, the work offers digital remains a ritual send-off, leaving room for memory, projection and loss.
