The First Scratch
Graduation project by Tereza Hubová at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
Growing up in Slovakia, Tereza Hubová was surrounded by traditional glassware displayed behind vitrines and reserved for special occasions. ‘The First Scratch’ questions this culture of preservation by encouraging everyday use instead of careful protection. Reinterpreting the familiar cut crystal bowl through softer, blown-glass forms, she explores how objects can gain meaning through use and change rather than remaining untouched. Hubová developed her own ‘First Scratch’ technique, in which one simple scratch on the surface of the glass releases internal tension that allows different patterns to emerge. Supported by extensive material research into firing, annealing and glass behaviour, the project combines functional objects with an evolving archive of experiments. It asks how traditions can be reimagined, and how glass can become an active companion in everyday life.
