Skin Discipline

Master · Contextual Design

Graduation project by Soyeon Kim at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

‘Skin Discipline’ is an installation which presents ceramic surfaces that embrace the imperfections of clay and glaze. Cracks, rough textures and irregular glazes evoke wrinkles, pores, pigmentation and acne. By allowing these partly uncontrollable transformations, the project questions ideals of smooth flawless skin. In South Korea, clear skin is associated with hygiene, self-discipline and social acceptance. As these values spread globally through the K-beauty industry, Korean women’s skin has become an object of attention and evaluation. Prompted by being repeatedly complimented and objectified for her skin while living in the Netherlands, Soyeon Kim explores how cultural contexts shape how people perceive themselves and evaluate others. Within the installation, metal surfaces act as mirrors, reflecting visitors and their surroundings. Through gaps between the ceramic tiles, visitors encounter one another’s gaze. By bringing multiple gazes together, the work shows how perceptions and judgements of skin are shaped by social relationships and cultural norms.
