Forms in Relation

Soojin Kim

Bachelor

Graduation project by Soojin Kim at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

‘Forms in Relation’ is a collection of slip-cast porcelain. Originally made to reproduce specific items on a large scale, plaster molds are used not only as a tool for reproduction, carrying expectations of form and function, but as a framework of physical relation and reconfiguration. Complementing a collection of discarded molds from ceramic production in Arita, Japan, with self-made plaster molds, Soojin Kim allows the cut-up and fragmented pieces to set the rules for this experimental series of slip cast objects. Each fragment has its own limitations in size, curves and openings. The designer joins the elements, as their roles change depending on the shapes they meet. In this sense, relation is not only directed by visual connection, but it’s a condition that impacts the potential of each part. Recast in pristine porcelain, the series presents a cohesive family of objects. Neither new nor the same, the work questions how fixed a role really is.
