Quilt: Threads of Continuity
Graduation project by Sarp Abenhabip at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
Gifted from mother to daughter, traditional handmade quilts have long been part of everyday life in Anatolia,Turkey. They carry stories through their stitching, patterns and materials. With ‘Quilt’, Sarp Abenhabip Büyükersen reimagines this disappearing craft as a collection of contemporary garments. Handmade in collaboration with craftspeople in Istanbul, the coats translate traditional quilting techniques into wearable pieces made from natural cotton, wool and silk satin.
Their soft, layered construction and reversible designs draw on the comfort and versatility of bedding, while stitched patterns reinterpret folk stories and cultural motifs through a contemporary visual language. Displayed as a collection of sculptural yet wearable coats, the project highlights the craftsmanship behind every stitch and seam. Rather than preserving quilt making as a static tradition, the designer proposes a future for the craft through transformation, creating new opportunities for artisans while introducing handmade quilting to new audiences.
