In Korea today, there’s a seemingly endless cycle of viral dessert trends spreading on social media, from chewy Dubai cookies to stretchy giant mochi. People see a dessert in their feed, try it once, then move on to the next. Being a digitally oriented group, the MZ generation, millennials and Gen Z, tend to be critical of these hyper-capitalist trends, but participate in them anyway. Saeyeon Yang links this behaviour to social pressure and a fear of missing out, or FOMO. In a video essay combining 3D animation with found footage sourced from Instagram reels, a narrator acts as a consumer of viral food trends who is also reflects critically on them, unpacking the dynamic interplay between algorithms, influencers and market forces. As food becomes content, we are all capable of both participating in and influencing herd mentality.
