Her Bed

‘Her Bed’ is an installation and performance centred on a large, elevated, semicircular bed. Enclosed by translucent blue latex curtains and accessible only to Sade Linda Ekwedike, it functions as a private room inserted into a public space. The semi-transparent curtains create a permeable boundary between the inside interior and the audience, allowing her to control the power dynamic during vulnerable moments as she rests, sleeps, and daydreams inside. Drawing on Ekwedike’s experience of growing up in Italy in the 2000s as one of the few mixed-race children in her surroundings, the project reflects on the experiences of parentified daughters within the African diaspora, exploring how the absence of personal space and the emotional burden of care affect mental health. By reclaiming a space for rest on her own terms, the work opens conversations around depression, care and the politics of personal space.
