After a Fire

Rosalie Mélin

Bachelor

Graduation project by Rosalie Mélin at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

As wildfires become increasingly common worldwide, Rosalie Mélin asks what remains after the flames have passed. Working with oak recovered from a burnt forest in the South of France, she developed new printing and lacquering techniques using charcoal made from the trees themselves. The installation centres on a blackened wooden door surrounded by 800 charcoal-printed postcards, each representing a tree that burned in the forest where the material was sourced. Each postcard combines an image of the landscape with a message that shifts between warning, reflection and remembrance. Visitors are invited to send the forest’s words through the letterbox. Once posted, the cards remain unattended behind the door. In doing so, the installation transforms the remains of a wildfire into a shared act of memory, inviting visitors to contribute to an evolving archive of environmental loss.
