Graduation project by Pin Chu at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

‘Hi, Daddy’ is a spatial film installation that explores how intimacy, care, and masculinity are performed across relationships structured by the word “daddy”, with connotations that extend to father, lover, provider and client. Rooted in participant-observer fieldwork within Taipei’s hostess industry and Mistress Clubs, spaces where men pay women for company and affection, the project draws on conversations, observations and personal diaries to examine forms of emotional labour and vulnerability that extend beyond the club into everyday family life. Three freestanding doors invite visitors to look through reversed peepholes, each revealing one film in a trilogy. As visitors move between the doors, the boundary between their roles as voyeur and participant blurs. By exposing the emotional negotiations within taboo spaces, the project traces how the shifting meaning of the word “daddy” reveals cracks in family life and gender roles, showing how loneliness and vulnerability shape the ways people seek intimacy and connection.
