To produce music nowadays, all you need is a laptop, leaving us without the visual cues of instruments that make up a live performance. Acknowledging this, Pepa Vanags has created a purposefully designed space for both producing and listening to her sonic experiments. Entering inside four curved wooden dividing walls that frame a circular carpeted floor, visitors are invited to sit or lie down and be immersed in the soundscape emanating from four leather-clad speakers. Grounded in a deep base and carried by layered experimental vocals, ‘Rec #15’ is one selected track from a series created specifically for this space, exploring the voice as both a musical and spatial medium. Working in Ableton and sampling her own voice, repetition and subtle variation are used to build a sonic environment that builds upon the samples. Language is fragmented, rewritten and repeated until sound and space blur into one another.
