Where the Devil of the Bog is Rooted
Graduation project by Paula Annija Ābolkalna at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
‘Where the Devil of the Bog is Rooted’ is an immersive spatial installation, a nest made of bogwood, a material record of time. This ancient material is a time capsule in itself: sub fossilised wood that has been buried in swampy wetlands for hundreds of years. Conceptually situated at Bierinu Marsh, a peat extraction site in Latvia, the installation immerses visitors in a dark and mystical atmosphere. A narrative soundscape introduces Latvian mythical tellings from the swamp, a landscape in transformation. The nest presents an accumulation and layering of time and material, connected through Latvian traditional braiding. The installation reflects on the destructive industry of peat extraction by introducing the habitat and its stories with a focus on weaving the passage of time.
