One Bite, Two Grounds
Graduation project by Paloma Durand at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
Growing up between Versailles and Vancouver, Paloma Durand came to know her Canadian heritage largely through food. Memories of maple syrup, corn on the cob, waffles and Jell-O become the starting point for a series of conceptual dishes that merge North American everyday food with the visual richness of French Baroque ornamentation. Their colourful, theatrical forms are presented alongside a menu inspired by the graphic language of fast-food restaurants, bringing two contrasting cultures together in a single installation. Combining food and sculptural presentation, the project explores how what we consume shapes our sense of belonging. Rather than asking visitors to choose between cultures, it uses food as a lens through which to reflect on memory, identity and the rituals that connect us to the places we call home.
