Precarious Balance

May (Gayeong) Kim

Bachelor

Graduation project by May (Gayeong) Kim at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

Inspired by the ever-changing forms of stones shaped by nature, May (Gayeong) Kim created a collection of hand-crafted ceramic tableware that celebrates irregularity and balance. The collection consists of more than 70 pieces, made with textured clays and a series of moulds. Each piece developed a distinct form as gravity influenced the hand-forming process, resulting in unique forms. Designed to be used as food containers, the asymmetrical plates can be stacked and arranged in countless ways, transforming the dining table into a playful composition. Rather than seeking uniformity, ‘Precarious Balance: A Daily Ritual of Stacking Imperfections’ invites users to embrace subtle unpredictability, discovering balance through interaction, attentive arrangement and the everyday ritual of sharing a meal.
