Reverie: A Quilted Story
Graduation project by Marijke Remmers at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
Drawing inspiration from the stitched steering wheels and diamond-patterned surfaces of customised automobile interiors, Marijke Remmers revisited the centuries-old craft of quilting through a contemporary lens. Working as an automotive upholsterer, she collected leftover leather, fabric and foam fillings and began experimenting intuitively with textures and techniques. The result is a bold, tactile statement: a strikingly colourful daybed composed of four mattress layers stacked on a simple base of ebonised oak. Each layer expresses a distinct character through its stitching and density and surface. By leaving the structure exposed, Remmers challenges traditional upholstery practices. Padding is no longer hidden beneath fabric or leather but celebrated as an essential visual and conceptual element. In the process, this design turns construction itself into ornament.
