Graduation project by Marc Bottenwieser at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

What would a textile collection look like if it evolved according to available resources rather than predetermined specifications? Marc Bottenwieser answers this question with ‘Loop Riot’, a textile system uniting the knitting loop with disturbances created by material change throughout production. Working with deadstock yarns collected from spinning mills and textile companies across Europe, he develops textiles from limited stocks that are difficult to use within conventional industrial production. As yarns run out during knitting, they are replaced through improvised selection, introducing shifts in colour, texture, and composition. The collections 'Overgrowth' and 'Noise Systems' demonstrate how these changes become embedded within the textile itself, producing unique lengths of fabric that cannot be reproduced. By bringing improvisation into industrial knitting, 'Loop Riot' reintroduces the designer's hand and creative instinct into production. Every substitution becomes a deliberate choice, allowing each textile to reflect the adaptations to material realities that shaped its making.
