Bachelor

Graduation project by Macarius Eng at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

Different seats shape how bodies behave. A low, deep lounge encourages relaxation, while an upright dining chair supports alertness and focus. Macarius Eng turns this relationship between posture and social atmosphere into what he calls a social scaffold: a seating system for shared spaces that can generate different conditions. Four steel modules – legs, seat, backrest and armrests – combine into low stools, dining chairs, lounge seats, benches, bar stools and more. Identical pins connect every module, while linked adjustments change seat angle, depth and support simultaneously. Each configuration holds the body differently while remaining structurally sound, ergonomically coherent and visually complete. Used in larger numbers, the system allows a host to transform the same space from a classroom or workshop into a waiting area, runway show, retreat or even a pop-up bar. Individually, the modules form furniture; collectively, they become spatial infrastructure for different social atmospheres.
