Playdates
Graduation project by Kalina Obreshkova at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
As a child, the space beneath the dining table was the only place where Kalina Obreshkova truly felt free to play. With ‘Playdates’, she reimagines this familiar piece of furniture as a shared space that encourages interaction between children and adults. Built from wood and hand-applied limestone concrete, the sculptural table takes on the appearance of a cave, inspired by early cave dwellings and the rock formations of Bulgaria. Its generous openings create a room within a room where children can retreat, imagine and remain connected to family life around them. As the limestone concrete slowly hardens over time, the table continues to change, much like the relationships it is designed to support. ‘Playdates’ transforms the dining table into a landscape where children and adults can play, gather and share the same space in different ways.
