Braiding Ruderal Tales
Graduation project by Julio Rébora at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
‘Braiding Ruderal Tales’ traces the emergence of De Fuut Tuin, a gardening initiative that sprouted from a year-long engagement with Eindhoven’s neglected Fuutlaan road verge. Working in solidarity with the site’s human and more-than-human inhabitants, Julio Rébora attended to the histories held by the land and drew on a lineage of alternative visions for urban development. Together with neighbours and ecologists, he developed participatory interventions that transformed the verge into a space of collective care.
This living process is reflected in an installation comprising a braided willow pavilion, gathered stones, rubble and plants. A spatialised multichannel sound composition weaves together an ecology of voices from the landscape, infrastructure, and conversations held on site. Hidden in cavities among branches and stones, one-fifth-scale glass reproductions of endangered mining bees invite careful observation, revealing how overlooked urban margins are refuges for biodiversity that can become sites for regeneration when control gives way to coexistence.
