Poetry as Archaeology
Graduation project by Julija Česnulaitytė at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
This archaeological display imagines a future where digital beings study humans through the act that once connected us: handwriting. For these algorithmic beings, this deeply human gesture is familiar in form yet completely unreachable in experience. Julija Česnulaitytė explores this gap by treating language as something felt, shaped by rhythm and the weight of the hand. Her book, writings on cabbage leaves and mirrored writing offer different ways of approaching what she calls a “biological horizon”, the limit of what biological bodies and algorithms can ever understand about one another. A carved cabbage head preserved like a biological specimen becomes a humorous yet fragile stand-in for the human head. Its layers and decay echoing the complexity of living beings. Together these works create a poetic archaeology, asking what algorithms might uncover about our embodied intelligence and how much of it may ever be understood.
