Ruin: Evidence of a hurricane
Graduation project by Jules Moizan at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
Ruin: Evidence of a Hurricane’ examines the tensions between Saint Martin's tourism industry and the meteorological forces that repeatedly disrupt it. Centred on La Belle Créole, an abandoned luxury hotel revisited after Hurricane Irma, the project treats the ruin as evidence of an ongoing cycle of destruction, reconstruction, and tourism-driven development. Field research, material traces, historical information and meteorological data reveal the landscape as an accumulation of environmental and economic forces rather than a consumable tourist image.
The installation translates these different forms of evidence into a sensory environment of layered, suspended fabrics, moving image and sound. Hurricane data from a single day distorts projected views of the site, while a sound composition combines meteorological information with the designer's memory of Irma’s wind. Moving between these fragmented layers, visitors encounter the hurricane simultaneously as recorded data, lived memory, and a force continually reshaping the island.
