Delicate Monsters

Jonas Dannacher created ‘Delicate Monsters’ from a sentiment of irritation with AI art. Instead of dismissing this phenomenon as invalid, he entered into an artistic dialogue with a Large Language Model and challenged the artificial intelligence to a creative exchange inspired by Exquisite Corpse, a dialogical drawing game popularised by surrealist artists. The result of this human-machine collaboration is a collection of interrelating images and installations centred on the impression of landscape art, a theme that the LLM had introduced into the exchange. Curiously, the artist responded to every AI-generated image by seeking to explore nature and incorporating collected natural materials, as well as his own individual artistic impressions, into the dialogue. The result of this hybrid artistic exploration is a series of ‘Delicate Monsters’ which collage machine and human expression, and impose to question where AI development is going, what we are trying to gain or what we might lose.
