‘CR!T’ is a digital tool which allows designers and design students to navigate the confusing world of ‘critical design’ through the lens of language. The browser extension, which marks critical terminology on existing websites, and the project’s digital archive offer resources to analyse the current discourses on criticality in design. As a graphic designer who facilitates research, Jess Kürschner provides a designed system that includes text fragments and sources, inviting users to add resources to the growing database. Taking advantage of the web’s networked structure, ‘CR!T’ embraces a multitude of approaches towards language and its relationship with critical thinking.
The project invites users to toggle between existing websites and its online interface, where collected snippets of text come together on a three-dimensional graphical grid. Through colour coding and spatial arrangement, relationships begin to emerge. Language, then, becomes a tool to collectively uncover patterns, routines and conceptual relationships.
