Concertino for Instruments and Bodies

Graduation project by Jasmine Flamant at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

Four instruments invite people to make music through their bodies and with one another. In ‘Concertino for Instruments and Bodies’, sensors taken from existing measuring devices are repurposed to register pulse, breath, temperature and electrical resistance. Each instrument asks for a different gesture and follows its own logic: a pulse felt through the finger triggers drums, while the CO2 in a breath becomes an airy, continuous sound.

The project draws on chamber music and jamming sessions, where bodies are already part of the compositional method. Here, their presence and interaction shape a collective live soundscape. One instrument recalls a medical oximeter, another a soil moisture meter, while the others draw on wind instruments and the gesture of taking someone’s temperature. Using bodily variables that we share but that differ from person to person, the installation offers an accessible way to perform together, regardless of musical experience.
