A Sense of Wonder

Ines Pijnenburg

Bachelor

Graduation project by Ines Pijnenburg at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

As screen time continues to rise, children are spending less and less time outdoors. According to one study, six percent of Dutch children never go outside at all. For Ines Pijnenburg, this worrying trend can be tackled by encouraging a shared sense of wonder for nature. Through a picture book and a series of playful assignments designed to foster open-ended play, participants search for five unique forest creatures, each allowing kids to get in touch with woodland environments by engaging their five senses. The kit also contains a series of crafted wooden tools with an intentionally undefined purpose, inviting children to play with them creatively when completing assignments for and with the forest creatures. By engaging with the story of the forest creatures, both children and adults can explore together, discovering new details in the natural world around them.
