Dinner, Drinks, and a Smoke please

Dining, drinking and smoking: these social rituals define the functions of the furniture collection produced by Franka de Gorter. Consisting of a buffet table, side table and bench, the series serves different moments of an evening out. Aperitivo, cocktails and cigarettes, each action is integrated within one of the furniture pieces through a dedicated vessel: plates are inserted into the buffet table, glasses are held within the side table, and an ashtray sits within the bench. Removing a vessel reveals a visible void, temporarily transforming the object into a passive piece of furniture. By determining when to place each vessel, the host decides when and how each social ritual is activated. The collection choreographs an evening out, and reveals how furniture can shape a shared experience.
