Neither outside nor inside
Graduation project by Elena Grippo at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
‘Neither Outside nor Inside’ is an immersive installation that explores how forms of water, particularly fog, can reshape people’s understanding of climate change and the forest ecosystems it affects. The work was developed through field research and walking as a practice to immerse oneself in the Lagorai mountain range in northern Italy. It combines conversations with climatologists and meteorologists with regional folklore and phrases, as well as spatial and directional adverbs from the Mòcheno language. Suspended textile panels made from tulle, bioplastic, polyester, and water-soluble fabrics evoke trees and drifting layers of mist. As visitors move through the space, air currents set the textiles in motion, while water-soluble materials gradually dissolve upon contact with them, transforming the installation and the ways it can be interpreted over time. By inviting visitors to become “water hunters”, the installation encourages them to sense the fragile relationships among climate, landscape and local knowledge.
