Exoyellow
Graduation project by Dugyung Kim at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
In October 2022, overcrowding at a party in Seoul turned fatal, killing numerous people, most of them young. For South Koreans in their 20s and 30s who had lost peers in a major ferry disaster in 2014, this was the second such tragedy. A media outlet described them as the ‘disaster generation’. In the following days, countless handwritten Post-it notes were left at the site as expressions of collective and political mourning.
‘Exoyellow’ is a multimedia installation comprising a hand-drawn video influenced by the notes’ colour and handwriting, synchronised LEDs and performance. The work considers how repeated disasters shape the generation’s relationship to possible disasters to come. Drawing on their collective emotional, bodily and political experiences, the project asks how repeated loss can be witnessed in a society where death has become frequent, and whether art can turn mourning into a political demand for accountability and safety.
