Where the stone moves
Graduation project by Costanza Sacher at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
‘where the stone moves’ follows the downstream journey of a river transformed by climate change in Val Venosta, South Tyrol. Centred on the little-known process of acid rock drainage, the film traces how melting rock glaciers release heavy metals trapped in pyrite into the waterways below, revealing environmental change largely invisible to the human eye. Combining field recordings, conversations with scientists and shepherds, and larvae of the alpine midge Diamesa steinboecki as biological witnesses, the project assembles a constellation of perspectives on a landscape under pressure. The 17-minute documentary is accompanied by illuminated photographic structures that extend the experience beyond the screen and are viewed in the round. The work invites sustained attention to the slow, interconnected processes through which climate change reshapes rivers and mountain landscapes, while bringing scientific knowledge into dialogue with lived experience.
