The Smell of Rain is a Bacterial Trace
Graduation project by Bridget Boyle at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
‘The Smell of Rain Is a Bacterial Trace’ stages a sensory encounter with the microbial world through petrichor, the distinctive smell released when rain falls on dry ground. Drawing on her background in biochemistry, Bridget Boyle combined laboratory research with glassblowing to investigate Streptomyces, the soil bacteria that produces geosmin, the molecule responsible for rain’s characteristic scent. An installation of more than 200 hand-blown glass bubbles contains living bacterial cultures, cultivated within sterilised vessels that allow them to be safely observed and smelt outside the laboratory. Water slowly moves through the suspended structure before dripping onto the soil below, echoing the ecological processes that produce petrichor. By making the bacterial origins of the smell of rain perceptible, the installation situates human bodies as participants within the ecosystems sustained by microbial life.
