Arms and Legs

Borisz Szily

Bachelor

Graduation project by Borisz Szily at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.

Will humans receive mechanical enhancements in the future, or will machines receive human implants? Reflecting on the rapidly changing landscape of engineering and technology, Borisz Szily proposes a system where artificial materials and natural structures are merged in hybrid constructions. An installation features a series of kinetic compositions based on the arms and legs of a human skeleton, each expanding and contracting with a system of tensile stainless steel cables to provide a range of human-like motions. A leg can provide stability in both standing and squatting positions, and a hanging structure is able to move up and down based on the movement of our arms. Each joint is 3D-printed from scans of actual human bones, with metal tubes connecting them for stability. In the future, these prototypes could be scaled up, employing human motion at an architectural scale.
