Somewhere in between The House, The Factory, The Church and The State
Graduation project by Amapola Cayrafourcq at Design Academy Eindhoven, 2026. Shown during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on Design Map, location F5.
What actually is the nuclear family? Amapola Cayrafourcq approaches this question through family photographs taken in 1970s suburban Flanders. Four screen-printed frames, shaped after a house, a factory, a church and a city hall, hold a composition made of cut-ups from the family’s image archive. Alongside these screen-printed frames, a graphic essay unpacks them. It draws on contemporary cultural theory which argues that the nuclear family ideal is not merely a biological concept but an ideology perpetuated through image-production and sustained by the architectures that contain it. Weaving in pop-culture references, the work demonstrates how private life is staged to justify a belief system based on a capitalistic production model. By altering the family's imagery with an auto-ethnographic gaze, ‘Somewhere Between the House, the Factory, the Church and the State’ invites others to question the families they thought was naturally given.
